The Rules

The fundamentals of beach soccer are exactly the same as the traditional game.  The main differences are as follows:

  1. NO SHOES ALLOWED. The game is played barefoot or with soft socks/ankle protection.
  2. Only 5 players are fielded by each team at one time (4 field players and a goalie).
  3. 3. The game is played on a rectangular field where the touch line is longer than the goal line.  The touchline should be 35 – 37 meters, and the goal line should be 26 – 28 meters.
  4. NO OFFSIDES.
  5. Substitutions are unlimited and can take place at any point during the game (similarly to the way hockey substitutions take place).
  6. Read this one carefully!  The game is played with three 12-minute periods.  If the game is tied after those 36-minutes, a 3-minute overtime period takes place with NO golden-goal.  If the game is still tied at this time, a golden-goal fashion of penalty kicks takes place (the first team to take a lead after an equal number of penalties has been take by both teams wins).
  7. Three referees are in charge of the match.  Two of them are on the field; one of them is on the sideline controlling the substitutions.
  8. There are NO WALLS allowed and all free kicks are DIRECT.  The player that is fouled is the player that takes the free kick.
  9. Players that are red carded are no longer allowed to enter the match, however, his team may make a substitution for him after 2-minutes have passed.
  10. When the ball is played out of bounds, “throw-ins” may be taken with the hands OR with the feet.  Corners must be taken with the feet and clearances from the goalie MUST be taken with the hands.
